Climate Model Suggests Collapse of Atlantic Circulation Is Possible

January 4, 2017

The idea of climate change causing a major ocean circulation pattern in the Atlantic Ocean to collapse with catastrophic effects is mostly regarded as an extreme longshot but a new paper based on analysis done at a group of research centers including Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego shows that climate models may be drastically underestimating that possibility.

Study: Diminishing Sea Ice is Increasing the Size of Arctic Ocean Food Web Base

November 23, 2016

Researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego and colleagues analyzed Arctic Ocean satellite data from a 19-year period and found that the amount of biomass production at the base of the food web has increased 47 percent since 1997.

The Future of Iconic Ocean Temperature Measurement Series to Be Considered

October 4, 2016

Scientists will convene Oct. 7 at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego to consider the future of one of the world’s longest continuous records of ocean conditions. Managers of the program, which observed the centennial of the first temperature measurement at Scripps Pier in August, will take up the question of how – and if – the program should continue into a second century as it is now and how it can be funded in the future.

New California Law to Curb Climate Pollutant Emissions Based on Scripps Science

September 19, 2016

California Governor Edmund “Jerry” Brown signed into law today new state restrictions on the emissions of so-called short-lived climate pollutants such as methane, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) used in refrigeration, and soot and other forms of black carbon. The new law was inspired by decades of research by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego Climate and Atmospheric Scientist Veerabhadran Ramanathan.
